April 25, 1776 Pennsylvania Colonial Currency 4 Pence Note

On April 6, 1776, 85,000 British Pounds in "Resolve Money" was authorized by the Pennsylvania Colony. The notes were issued in denominations as small as 3 Pence and as large as 2 Shilings 6 Pence. The dates printed on the notes were April 25, 1776, just months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. There were multiple signers of these "early Americana" currency notes. The note in the current offering was signed by William Clifton. Little is known of William Clifton, but obviously he was involved in public life in the early days of our country’s birth. His is the lone signature on the 4 pence notes. The signature of William Clifton (Wm Clifton) on the 4 pence note offered here is of "exceptional" quality and is in dark red ink, which is highly desirable in the collecting community. The "British Arms" are also prominently displayed on the obverse. The paper quality is designated as "premium paper quality" by PCGS and it exhibits amazingly high quality edges and broad borders. Truly an amazing specimen and is the finest I have found. The grading service of PMG (the only population report available to the author) has graded only 6 notes of this variety, with only one uncirculated example graded 63EPQ.
If you are a lover of early American history, then this note is sure to be stimulating and thought-provoking. It is truly amazing that anything of this quality has survived the turbulence of the last 234 years. At only $1,250 this note seems to be a tremendous value.
